Example of a Camtasia Studio Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan Title: How to Use Camtasia Studio
General Goals:
Learn how to record the screen
Specific Objectives:
•  Understand screen recording software

Required Materials: Computer

Lead-in:
Have the students write a list of 5 favorite television shows. Now, write down what makes them good. (Entertaining, funny, exciting, etc.)

Explain that learning can be fun and interesting like television shows - especially when recording is involved. Introduce idea that today they are going to learn how to become their own desktop celebrity - by first learning how screen recording works.

Step-by-Step Procedures:

1. Instruct students to download a free 30-day evaluation of Camtasia Studio from www.techsmith.com.

2. Tell students to follow directions:

Step 1: Open Recorder

Step 2: Select Input

Step 3: Record
Click the Record button to start the recording process. If you chose Input > Fixed Region without a starting point, a rectangle appears for you to place the recording area on screen.

•  Show steps on the screen to be captured by a video.

•  Click the Pause button to pause the video capture. If you want to restart, click the Record button again.

Step 4: End Recording
Click the Stop button to end the video capture session.

Step 5: Save Video
The Save Video File As dialog box displays and prompts you for a file name. Once the video is saved, it will playback for you to review in Camtasia Player.

3. Tell students to perform a brief onscreen task, such as moving a document to the Recycle bin, setting a preference in Word, performing a calculation in Excel, etc. Ask them to record it with Camtasia Studio. After they have saved it, have students pair up and show the video to a partner. After watching the video, have the student recreate what the partner did. Discuss with the students - how did the video affect how the student did the task in real life?
